Forensic Science: how AI affects graduate hiring
A forensic science degree usually leads to a lab analyst role, not directly to policing or federal work. AI-assisted tools are changing how that analyst job runs day to day, but the role itself is judged to hold up far longer than many other entry-level science jobs.
What does a forensic DNA analyst's job actually involve, step by step?
A DNA case moves through extraction (pulling DNA out of the sample), amplification (copying it enough to read), interpretation, and a technical review by a second analyst before anything leaves the lab. A Rapid DNA machine speeds up extraction and amplification, and probabilistic genotyping software changes the interpretation step, comparing profiles and flagging likely matches, but a person still runs the equipment, judges an ambiguous mixed sample, and signs off on the review.
How does this job compare with the police-officer and federal-agent paths?
The forensic analyst job is judged to be reshaped by these tools, not replaced, since someone still has to run the analysis and testify about it in court personally, not just hand over a report. Two other paths this major can lead to, police officer and federal agent, are judged even more shielded from AI, with any change landing much further out for both, since those jobs depend on physical presence, field judgment, and legal authority no software carries.
If it's not AI, why is this job market still competitive?
More people are graduating from forensic science programs than there are open lab positions, a supply-and-demand problem separate from anything AI is doing, so competition for a job is real regardless. Building genuine lab experience and certification, and practicing explaining technical results clearly under courtroom questioning, matters more here than keeping up with the latest analysis software.
