Class of 2030: the hiring decline may start before you graduate
AI already produces the work that used to go to new hires, such as gameplay code, design documents, level drafts, and background assets, so junior roles shrink first. Optimizing on real hardware and tuning game feel help the programmer path hold out a little longer. The mass layoffs of 2023–25 were driven mostly by the industry downturn.

Major lifespan is the time left until AI is expected to start shrinking hiring of this major’s graduates. It doesn’t mean the major will disappear or that everyone will lose their job.

Game Design & Development: how AI affects graduate hiring

Game design programs teach prototyping mechanics, blocking out levels, and playtesting until a jump or a shot feels right. AI tools can already rough out code, art, and level layouts, so daily work is shifting toward directing and polishing what a tool drafts first.

How does AI change a game-design student's daily work?

Instead of building a level or a character from a blank file, a student now often starts from an AI-made draft and spends the day judging what to keep, fixing physics that feels wrong, and rewriting dialogue so it sounds human. YOU'RE NEXT expects that shift to show up in industry-wide hiring by around 2028, reaching art and design roles before it reaches programmers.

Which game-design career paths feel this soonest?

Not evenly. Background and character artists are judged to feel the pressure earliest, since AI already produces usable art quickly. Game designers and 3D modelers follow soon after. Programmers, who spend their time getting a game to run well on real hardware and tuning how a jump or a hit actually feels, are judged to hold out the longest of the four paths.

What should a game-design student do now?

Finish small, playable games outside of class instead of relying on assignments alone; a working demo says more than a transcript. Treat an AI draft as a fast starting point to rework by hand, and practice steering it toward one specific look or feel. Game jams, mod communities, and internships build the portfolio and judgment a resume alone cannot show.
