Class of 2030: the hiring decline may start before you graduate
AI agents already resolve tier-1 help desk tickets, the typical first IT job, so entry-level hiring shrinks first, with systems and network operations roles following. On-site hardware and cabling work remains, but there is no licensing barrier. Job losses from the move to the cloud are separate from AI.

Major lifespan is the time left until AI is expected to start shrinking hiring of this major’s graduates. It doesn’t mean the major will disappear or that everyone will lose their job.

Information Technology: how AI affects graduate hiring

The typical first IT job, resolving help-desk tickets, is already something AI agents handle on their own, which is why entry-level hiring shrinks before systems and network roles do. On-site work like running cables and swapping hardware still needs a person in the room, but there's no license protecting any of these jobs from the shift.

Why does the help desk change before other IT jobs?

AI agents already resolve routine tier-one help-desk tickets, password resets, software installs, common error messages, on their own, so that entry point into IT shrinks first. Systems administration and network-engineering roles, which involve diagnosing problems across an organization's actual infrastructure, follow only after that.

Does on-site IT work hold up differently than help-desk work?

Physically running cables, replacing failed hardware, and setting up equipment in a server room still requires someone on-site, so this kind of work is judged to hold up notably longer than remote help-desk support. Cloud migration has already reduced some on-site infrastructure jobs, but that shift is separate from what AI is doing to the help desk.

What should an IT student do besides the standard coursework?

Get certified in something specific, like networking or cloud infrastructure, rather than staying general, since a broad IT-support résumé is exactly what AI agents now compete with directly. Practice using AI troubleshooting tools yourself so you can supervise and correct them, and look for an internship doing on-site systems or network work rather than phone-based support.
