Physical Therapy (DPT): how AI affects graduate hiring

Physical therapists spend the day watching how a patient moves, adjusting exercises in real time, and using hands-on techniques machines can't replicate, then documenting progress afterward. AI is already lightening that documentation and helping design exercise programs, but the actual treatment stays a licensed, hands-on job.

What part of physical therapy is AI changing first?

AI tools already help draft exercise programs, analyze a patient's posture or gait from video, and speed up treatment notes, cutting down the paperwork side of a PT's day. None of that replaces the hands-on adjustment and real-time coaching a session actually needs, which is why YOU'RE NEXT doesn't expect hiring to soften until around 2041, well past most other health majors.

Why does the assistant role shift sooner than the therapist role?

A physical therapist assistant, who works under a therapist's plan, is expected to see hiring soften noticeably earlier than the therapist role itself, since assistants do more of the repeatable exercise coaching that remote apps can partly take over. Athletic trainers, who also do hands-on injury work, track closer to the therapist's own timeline than the assistant does.

How should a DPT student prepare for this shift?
