Professional & Technical Writing: how AI affects graduate hiring

A professional and technical writing degree is built around turning something complex, a piece of software, a policy, a process, into instructions a stranger can follow. That translation work is now the first thing a drafting tool is asked to do, straight from the code or the policy document itself.

What did a junior technical writer spend the day doing?

A lot of the job was reading through code comments, engineering tickets or a policy and turning that into a help article or user guide that matched the company's style guide, then adding screenshots or diagrams. A drafting tool can now take the same code comments and commit messages and produce a first pass of that same help article in seconds, so a documentation team needs fewer people doing that first draft.

How does this differ from what happens to editors and PR staff?
