Theology & Ministry: how AI affects graduate hiring
A theology degree can lead toward ordained ministry, but most graduates start in a support role: a youth minister, an education coordinator, someone doing sermon research and church administration before ordination. Those support tasks are exactly what a church's software can now draft or schedule on its own.
What does a not-yet-ordained church staff job involve?
A youth or education minister typically writes lesson materials for classes and small groups, plans events and handles a congregation's scheduling and records, sometimes drafting notes a pastor uses for a sermon. A tool can already draft that lesson material and manage a calendar, so a church watching its budget can get by with fewer of these support staff, well before ordained roles are affected at all.
Why does becoming an ordained pastor or priest change the picture?
Leading worship and visiting the sick or grieving stay a person's job no matter what, but reaching that role at all requires years of seminary study followed by ordination, formal recognition by a specific denomination that a university can't grant on its own. That long, separate process is why ordained paths are judged to hold up far longer than support staff work, which has no such requirement standing in the way.
How should a theology student prepare for this?
Practicum or internship hours inside an actual congregation, required by most programs anyway, teach the planning and record-keeping work the field runs on and are worth taking seriously rather than treating as a formality. Getting comfortable with the scheduling and lesson-planning software a church already uses turns a graduate into the person who checks that work rather than the one competing for it. Anyone aiming at ordination should treat it as its own multi-year track, separate from the degree itself.
