An arborist's day is climbing into a live tree with ropes and a chainsaw to remove exactly the right limbs, a job that depends on judgment under real physical risk. AI can flag which trees look hazardous from photos, but it cannot climb or cut.
Which part of tree work does AI help with?
AI is decent at scanning photos or drone footage to flag which trees look diseased, cracked, or leaning dangerously toward a house, which helps a crew plan its day before anyone straps on climbing spikes. What AI cannot do is the climb itself: working a chainsaw at height in a moving canopy, tied off with ropes, is a physical skill no machine currently performs.
Why does this job stay human for so long?
No robot can currently climb a live tree, rig ropes through a canopy, and run a chainsaw safely at height, so the limiting factor is physical capability rather than a licensing rule. A handful of states require a tree-care license, and a voluntary certification from the arborists' trade group, ISA, signals skill, but most of the barrier here is simply that no machine can do the climbing yet.
How can someone break into arborist work?
Most arborists start on a ground crew, hauling brush and running the chipper, before training up to climbing and rigging under an experienced tree worker. Earning a voluntary ISA certification helps show employers and clients you know proper pruning and rigging technique. A forestry or horticulture program can add plant-science knowledge that pure fieldwork doesn't teach.
