What already lets people skip a clinic visit for hearing help?
Phone-based hearing tests and hearing aids a person can buy and adjust without a prescription already cover the common case of mild to moderate hearing loss in adults, work that used to require a clinic appointment. What still lands on a licensed audiologist is anything more complex: implants, balance disorders, and testing young children who can't reliably follow a self-guided app.
Why hasn't the license itself stopped this shift?
A doctorate and a state license still gate the audiologist title, but a change in federal rules a few years back already opened routine hearing-aid fitting to self-service for the mildest, most common cases, so the license no longer covers that easier work the way it used to. That's why clinics need fewer audiologists for routine visits even though the credential itself hasn't changed.
What should someone training in this field lean into?
Depth in implants, pediatric testing and vestibular or balance work is the strongest bet, since that's the part self-fitting devices and phone apps can't reach and where more than half of today's tasks are expected to stay human. A related path through speech-language work is common too, since both fields deal closely with how people communicate.
