A chatbot can now remind someone to take medication and walk them through signing up for Medicaid. What it still can't do is get a wary neighbor to actually open the door and trust a stranger with a health problem.
What part of this job is already being handled by a chatbot?
Routine health education, appointment and medication reminders, and walking someone through a benefits application are tasks an AI chatbot now does reasonably well, and some clinics already route people to one first. Building the kind of trust that gets someone to open their door, admit a problem, and actually follow through — the core of this job — stays with a person.
Why does this job shrink even though the trust-building part can't be automated?
Most of these positions exist because a grant or public program pays for them, not because a clinic's own budget funds the role directly, so when that outside funding tightens, posts disappear regardless of how essential the in-person work still is. That funding link, more than any tool, is the real reason headcount is expected to fall.
What should a community health worker do to make their position more durable?
Learning to document outcomes clearly — showing a funder exactly what in-person outreach accomplished that a chatbot reminder didn't — helps make the case for keeping a position funded. Picking up a recognized state certification where one exists also makes a worker easier for a clinic to justify keeping on staff rather than routing that budget elsewhere. A background in social work, human services or public health, listed below, supports this path.
