Running a manual lathe by feel is a skill no robot has copied yet. What's disappearing is the reason to keep a person on a manual machine at all, now that software can turn one custom part into cheap, unattended work on a computer-controlled machine.
What has changed about making a one-off custom part?
A single, unusual part used to justify keeping a skilled hand on a manual lathe or mill, because setting up a computer-controlled machine for just one piece wasn't worth the trouble. Software that generates the machine's own cutting program now makes that one-off job cheap and mostly unattended, which removes the main reason shops kept manual-machine operators on staff.
Why hasn't manual machining disappeared completely?
Feeding the cutting tool by feel to avoid chatter or a burned edge, and dressing a grinding wheel or sharpening a tool by hand at the bench, are still things a person does better than a program can. Repair work — fixing a worn part that no drawing exists for — keeps a smaller number of manual-machine jobs alive even as routine production moves to computer-controlled machines.
How should a machinist adapt to this shift?
Training on computer-controlled machining and the design software that programs it, through a machine-tool or CNC program, is now the safer path than specializing only in manual-lathe work. Keeping and advertising manual-machine repair skills is still worth doing, since that thinner slice of the trade is exactly what survives.
