Which part of a jeweler's work moved to a machine first?
Turning a design into a wearable piece once took a goldsmith's own drawing and wax-carving skill. A CAD program can now draft that shape and a 3D printer can grow the mold overnight, so the drafting-and-modeling stage is largely software work before a piece ever reaches the bench.
Why does the bench itself still need a person?
A ring that pinches has to be resized while the customer waits at the counter, and a couple picking an engagement setting wants someone who can push the stone in under a loupe and adjust the design on the spot. No license protects this trade, so it survives simply because that hands-on moment is still hard to replace.
What's worth learning if you want to stay in this trade?
A crafts or jewelry-making program still teaches the basics of stone-setting and casting, but the more useful new skill is running the whole CAD-to-printer pipeline yourself rather than outsourcing it, so you bring judgment on fit, comfort and finish that a machine still can't supply on its own.
