A furnace runs mostly on its own control software, but someone still has to open the tap and handle molten metal nearby. The mill matters more than the tech: nonunion scrap-melting mills automate faster than union-run mills still processing raw ore.

What does AI already do inside a steel mill?

Running the furnace itself — holding temperature, timing the melt, adjusting the mix — is largely software-controlled now. What software still can't do is open the tap hole to pour molten metal, patrol the hot zone to check for problems, or fix a tuyere, the nozzle that blows air into the furnace, when it clogs. Those stay physical, hands-on jobs next to a very hot furnace.

Why are some steel mills cutting jobs faster than others?

Mills that melt scrap steel with electricity, often nonunion and free to lay people off at will, are automating and thinning crews sooner. The older mills that turn raw ore into steel are mostly staffed under a steelworkers' union contract, which forces any headcount cuts to happen through retirements and departures rather than layoffs, so change arrives there more slowly.

What should someone entering this trade focus on?

Cross-training on both the control-room software and the hands-on tapping and sampling work makes an operator useful regardless of which kind of mill hires next, since the two mill types are automating at different speeds. Building seniority also matters more here than in most trades, because union rules at the older mills protect people by tenure when the workforce does shrink.
