Software cleared by federal regulators now guides the probe and flags when an image is good enough to read, which lets a nurse or a less-trained medical assistant capture a usable diagnostic view without years of dedicated ultrasound training. Portable, handheld probes spreading that capability to a patient's actual bedside is what's letting this happen outside the imaging department.
Why can hospitals cut dedicated sonographer positions so easily?
A national certification exam is the industry's standard credential, but most states never turned it into a legal license the way nursing is licensed, so a hospital is free to credential whoever it wants for this work. Positioning a patient correctly, applying the probe by feel to find the right angle, and reading a borderline image still take real skill, but nothing legally requires a dedicated sonographer to be the one doing it.
How should a sonographer build a more secure career?
Building depth in the harder, specialized scans — the ones a nurse with AI guidance can't yet capture reliably — sets a sonographer apart from the basic bedside scanning that's spreading to other staff. A radiologic-technology or dedicated sonography credential is still the entry point, and picking up a second imaging specialty makes someone harder to substitute.
