Most of an environmental consultant's job is writing the review document a big project needs before it can get approved, often running to hundreds of pages of data and analysis. Standing up at a contentious public hearing to defend a finding, and mediating between a developer eager to build and a community worried about the impact, also stay squarely a person's job, since no report writes itself out of that room.
What background prepares someone for this field?
Degrees in environmental engineering, geology, atmospheric science or environmental science all give someone the technical grounding to read and challenge a review document rather than just produce one. Since drafting is moving to AI, practicing how to present findings clearly and hold up under hostile questioning at a public hearing is now a more valuable skill to build than speed at writing.
