On an earnings call, an analyst is listening for the one hesitant answer that contradicts the polished script, then calling a client to defend a stock opinion that goes against the crowd. AI already builds the model and drafts the report, so the job is shrinking toward reading what people actually meant.
What part of this job is already done by AI?
Pulling numbers from a filing into a spreadsheet and drafting the first version of a report are now things a model can do directly from public documents, in minutes rather than a day. That has already removed a lot of the entry-level work a junior analyst used to build a model from scratch to learn.
What still needs a person listening in real time?
Catching the one answer on an earnings call that doesn't quite match the rest of the script, and then defending an opinion that goes against what every other analyst on the call believes, both depend on judgment formed by being in the room, not reading a transcript later. A model reads words; it doesn't hear hesitation.
How should someone build a career in this field now?
The usual path is finance or economics coursework plus an internship, but the entry-level modeling work that used to teach the basics is mostly gone, so building real listening and writing-a-defensible-opinion skill earlier matters more. Sitting in on real earnings calls as early and often as possible is the practical substitute.
