A trader watches a screen moving faster than a person can read, then picks up the phone to negotiate a trade too unusual for an exchange, and owns the loss when a bet goes wrong. Algorithms already run ordinary buying and selling; AI is now moving into the phone deals too.
What kind of trading is already fully automated?
Ordinary buying and selling of standard, listed securities on a public exchange is already handled by algorithms end to end, with no person clicking a button for each order. That side of the job disappeared first, since a machine reacts to price changes far faster than a person watching the same screen.
What kind of trade still goes through a person?
A trade too large or unusual for the public exchange to absorb quietly gets negotiated directly between firms, over the phone, in a private off-exchange deal, and someone has to hold their nerve through a sudden shock and own the outcome if it goes badly. AI is starting to handle parts of that too, but the accountability still lands on a person.
How does someone actually get into this line of work?
Most traders start with a finance, math or economics background and learn the job in a junior seat on a real desk, watching how a senior trader reads risk in the moment. Since access depends on who a firm trusts with real money, building a track record of calm, accountable decisions matters more than any single credential.
