Most event planners break in through hotel or venue operations, hospitality programs, or simply years of coordinating smaller events before clients trust them with a big one — there's no license standing in the way. AI is already good at the proposals and vendor emails; it can't stand on a loading dock the day the truck is late.
Which event-planning tasks does AI handle now?
Writing proposals, building budgets, drafting vendor emails and answering routine attendee questions are all jobs AI already does competently, and planners are handing that load over fast. That's real time saved, but it's the back-office half of the job — the parts that happen at a desk before anyone shows up.
What still has to happen in person on event day?
Running the floor once guests arrive, negotiating face to face with a venue or sponsor, and fixing a problem live in front of a crowd are physical, real-time jobs no software performs. Because only the desk work shrinks, the planners who remain end up running more events each with a smaller support team behind them.
How should event planners and students prepare?
If you're working in the field, push toward the day-of role — floor management and live problem-solving — rather than the proposal-writing that's now mostly automated. Hospitality management, sports management and arts administration degrees all train the same vendor-negotiation and live-execution instincts, so any of them is a reasonable way into this work.
