Which foundry tasks get automated first, and why?
Die-casting — where hot metal gets injected into a reusable metal mold — is easier to hand to a robot with a vision camera checking for flaws, and that's where headcount drops first, largely because it's dangerous work a plant owner is glad to get a person away from. Sand casting, where a mold is packed fresh each time and a worker judges its soundness by feel, keeps people longer.
Why does sand casting lag behind die-casting on this?
Pouring metal into a hand-packed sand mold and knocking the sand off the finished piece afterward involve more variation than a robot currently handles well, so those roles are judged to shift later — around the middle of this shift's overall window, well behind die-casting's automated cells. The two halves of this trade move on different timelines even though they sound similar.
What should a foundry worker do to stay valuable?
Spotting a bad cast by sound, color and surface texture is a skill built from years on the floor, and it's worth explicitly documenting and teaching rather than treating as instinct nobody wrote down, since that judgment is exactly what current automation can't replicate. Cross-training toward sand-mold work, which changes more slowly, is a safer bet than staying purely in a die-casting cell.
