Which part of this engineer's job moves to software first?
Route planning, load calculations and permit paperwork are the office tasks AI already reaches for, since no rule requires a named engineer to sign off on them personally. Field work is different: pipeline-safety rules require a qualified person to inspect a line, respond to a leak and decide on a shutoff. This site expects the software behind that office work to turn genuinely useful well before utilities actually trim planning staff, since a regulated utility takes time to trust a new tool.
Why can't a utility just cut engineering staff fast?
Federal pipeline-safety rules, known as 49 CFR 192, require a qualified operator for exactly the tasks that stay physical: inspecting pressure vessels, being first to a leak, and making the call to shut off supply. No law sets a minimum headcount, so this barrier is judged fairly low, and this site still expects most of today's hands-on work to remain a person's job twenty years out.
How should someone in this role prepare for the shift?
Since design and routine planning are what AI reaches first, building depth in field judgment, like reading an old pipe joint and making a fast, correct shutoff call, matters more than modeling speed. Getting fluent with the sensor and predictive-maintenance software utilities are adopting keeps an engineer useful as a partner to those tools rather than competing with them for a smaller stack of paperwork.
