Why hasn't the rest of the tannery caught up?
Loading a wet, heavy hide into a tanning drum, working it through a chemical bath, and hand-finishing the surface are messy, physically awkward tasks that would need an expensive custom robot to replace. Tanning runs on thin margins as an industry, so most operations simply can't justify that investment while a person can still do the job.

Cross-training across the drum-loading, machine-shaving and hand-finishing stages makes a worker useful wherever a small tannery is short-staffed, since these operations rarely have room to hire narrowly.
