A life coach's real work is the weekly check-in: following up on what someone said they'd do, and reading what's actually going on under a hard conversation. There's no license for this job, so anyone can use the title, and trust becomes the whole business.
How is AI already changing this kind of work?
People now use a chat app between sessions the way they'd use a journal, and some coaches lean on that too, drafting reflection questions or session notes with it to save time. What's harder to replace is holding someone to a commitment week after week and noticing when their story doesn't match how they actually sound.
Why does accountability still need to be a person?
Following up on a promise someone made to themselves, and gently pointing out that their tone shifted the moment a hard topic came up, depend on a relationship built over many conversations, not a single input. Because nothing licenses this work, a coach's whole value rests on a client feeling genuinely tracked and understood.
How does someone actually become a coach?
Most coaches come from another career, human resources, sales, therapy-adjacent work, and add a paid certificate program, since none is legally required. Because that credential is optional, what actually gets someone hired again is a specific focus, like career transitions or executives, and a client's sense that they're truly being followed.
