A market researcher runs a focus group, a small discussion meant to test real reactions, watching who nods along and who goes quiet, then later tells a client their favorite idea tested badly. Software can now fake a typical survey answer, so real people get saved for questions that matter most.
What part of research work is already automated?
Writing a decent survey, running the statistics, and drafting a summary report are things AI already does directly, and a computer can even simulate a plausible set of typical answers for a quick, low-stakes check. That has already cut into the routine survey side of the job that used to take a small team.
What still calls for a real person in the room?
Reading who in a focus group is quietly disengaging versus genuinely persuaded, designing a study around a messy question that doesn't fit a clean survey template, and telling a client their favorite idea tested badly all need someone willing to deliver an honest answer, not a convenient one.
How does someone build a career doing this work?
Most researchers come from a social-science background, sociology, psychology, or a related field, starting as an assistant who learns to write a discussion guide that doesn't lead the answer. Practicing how to deliver an unwelcome finding calmly and clearly matters more now than knowing how to run a standard survey.
