Why are driving jobs disappearing from mines first?
Autonomous haul trucks from makers like Caterpillar and Komatsu already carry ore and waste rock at large open-pit copper and gold mines without anyone in the cab. Because driving a haul truck used to be a big share of a mine's hourly jobs, that is the work machines take over before anything changes underground, where rock is actually cut and supported.
Why do safety jobs underground last longer?
Federal mine-safety rules require a mine to keep certified examiners and a mine-rescue team on staff no matter how automated its trucks get, so those jobs have a floor under them. Bolting a roof, checking whether ground is actually about to give way, and reaching someone hurt deep underground still need a trained person physically there, not a truck following a mapped route.
