Why does this job stay people-heavy even as tools improve?
Nuclear safety rules put a named, accountable person behind every safety decision, and someone still has to physically enter containment during an outage and manage crews handling nuclear fuel — none of that shifts to software just because drafting gets faster. On top of that, growing interest in smaller, factory-built reactors and demand from exporting reactor technology abroad means more projects need engineers, not fewer.
What's the path into nuclear engineering?
A degree specifically in nuclear engineering is the standard entry point, often followed by additional plant-specific and safety training once hired. Since AI is mainly changing how safety analyses get written rather than who makes the final call, it's worth getting comfortable working alongside AI drafting tools while still building the hands-on plant experience regulators expect from anyone accountable for a decision.
