A vision test can now largely run itself, and AI software already reads a retinal scan well enough to flag disease. What state licensing boards still won't let happen is a store selling glasses with nobody licensed reviewing the result.
What parts of an eye exam does AI already handle well?
Measuring a prescription and reading a retinal photo for signs of disease are tasks automated refraction machines and AI-based image review now do at a level regulators have accepted, letting a single optometrist effectively cover more patients or more store locations than before. Diagnosing what's actually wrong with a patient's eyes and deciding on treatment stays a licensed professional's call.
Why does a retail eyewear chain still need an optometrist on staff at all?
State optometry boards require a licensed professional to be responsible for a patient's exam and diagnosis no matter how automated the testing equipment is, and a federal rule guarantees a patient their own prescription so they can buy glasses anywhere — both of which keep a licensed signer in the loop even as one person handles more locations. Remote exams are only allowed in part of the country, which also slows how far this can spread.
What should someone in or entering optometry prepare for?
Comfort overseeing exam results gathered from several locations at once, rather than only running exams in person one at a time, is becoming a real part of the job as chains stretch each optometrist further.
