A sheet metal worker's day splits between shop time, bending and forming panels on a press brake, and job-site time, measuring an actual building and fitting ducts into whatever oddly shaped space is really there. AI already generates the flat-pattern cutting layout for a duct, but someone still measures the site and installs the piece.
What part of this trade does AI already handle?
Software already turns a duct design into the flat cutting pattern a machine needs, and automated lines already bend and form standard panels with little hand involvement. That desk-and-shop work is largely settled; what it can't do is walk into a real building and measure what's actually there.
Why does installation stay a hands-on job?
No two buildings are framed exactly the same, so fitting a duct run to an actual ceiling, wall or beam takes an on-site measurement and often an on-the-spot adjustment that a pre-cut pattern doesn't anticipate. Handling sharp panel edges and heavy sheet safely while working at height also takes trained hands, not a machine.
What should a sheet metal worker build skill in now?
Since the cutting and forming side is already largely automated, the skill worth building is reading a real job site fast, taking accurate field measurements and adjusting a fabricated piece to fit. Cross-training in welding or HVAC systems also widens which installation jobs a sheet metal worker can take on.
