Most survey work is moving off a clipboard entirely. Counting and tabulating results is already AI's job, and many surveys are shifting to government records, the web, or AI-run phone calls, but the US has no national ID registry, so the Census Bureau still needs people knocking on doors.

Why is most survey work already changing?

Adding up and cross-checking thousands of survey answers is exactly the kind of task AI already does well, and plenty of surveys that used to mean a phone call or a doorstep visit now pull from records the government already has, a web form, or an AI-run phone line instead. That leaves door-to-door visits as the leftover method, used only when nothing else works.

Why does the Census still send people door to door?

The US has no single national registry listing every resident, so a knock on the door is still how the Census Bureau finds people who never show up in any database. Federal law requires the Bureau to count everyone once a decade, which is why field staff get hired in waves for that count, while survey firms like NORC, Westat, and RTI hire interviewers as needed for other surveys.

What should someone taking this kind of job expect?

Almost none of this job is desk work: it is persuading someone who does not want to answer the door to talk to you, and knowing when an odd answer means you need to go back and check it in person. Most of these positions are hired for a specific count or survey rather than as a long career, whether through the Census Bureau directly or a contractor.
