Deciding exactly where to cut a board for the most value is already something a scanner and software do well. What that software can't do is lift the board or swap a blade — and small sawmills, running thin margins, aren't rushing to buy robots that could.
What part of sawmill work already runs on software?
Scanning a board's grain and defects and calculating the cut that gets the most usable lumber out of it — work that used to depend on an experienced eye — is now handled well by machine vision and optimization software. That decision-making step moved to the machine years before the physical handling around it did.
Why hasn't the rest of the mill floor automated with it?
A robot that can lift a heavy, awkward board, change a blade safely, or clear a jam of sawdust without cutting corners on safety is a much harder and more expensive machine to build than a scanning camera. Most sawmills are small operations running on tight margins, so they're not the customers pushing that kind of robotics forward soon.
What should someone working in a mill focus on now?
Getting hands-on with the scanning and cut-optimization software, not just the saw itself, makes an operator useful on the side of the floor where the mill's owners are actually investing. Blade-changing and machine-maintenance skills also stay valuable, since that physical work is exactly what's staying human the longest.
