Classics majors most often become Latin teachers or go on to law school, two very different exits that shrink on two different timelines. What holds a Latin classroom together, and what a law firm's entry-level hiring is actually judged on, matters more here than the major's small size.
Why can a Latin class disappear even with a licensed teacher?
A state license and the simple fact that someone has to manage a room of students give a Latin class more staying power than an unlicensed job, but no law requires a district to keep offering Latin at all. A school facing a tight budget can just as easily cut the one Latin section it runs and send those students into a different language class instead, license or no license.
Why is the law school route judged to shrink earlier?
Reading Latin and Greek closely, tracking grammar and argument across a dense text, is training a lot like what a first-year law student does, part of why classics has long fed into law school. Entry-level hiring at firms is judged to tighten earlier than the classroom path, on its own separate timeline that has more to do with how firms staff junior lawyers than with anything happening in a Latin classroom.
What should a classics major actually do to prepare?
