East Asian Studies: how AI affects graduate hiring

East Asian studies pairs a language with the region's history, politics and economy, aiming at a broader expertise than fluency alone. That broader training doesn't fully protect the entry-level sales and translation jobs graduates often start in, since a drafting tool can already produce the export paperwork and buyer email those roles were built on.

Why isn't East Asian language skill enough to get hired anymore?

An entry-level sales or translation job used to go to whoever could read and write the language well enough to handle export paperwork and buyer correspondence, and a tool now drafts that same paperwork and correspondence at a workable level on its own. What still needs a person is the in-person side: negotiating terms on a business trip and building the kind of trust a buyer needs before signing a deal.

Because the degree already combines language with the region's politics and economy, pairing it with a concrete business skill, supply chain, finance or a specific industry, gives a graduate something beyond fluency to point to when a hiring manager assumes translation itself is handled by software. Building relationships during a study-abroad stay or an internship at a company with real ties to the region also does more than classroom language practice alone.
