AI takes over entry-level work like design and drawing reviews, and a PE stamp is required only on utility and public-sector drawings, so licensing does little to slow the shift. Data center and grid buildouts are boosting utility hiring, and on-site commissioning stays with people. A degree alone doesn't earn a PE license.

Major lifespan is the time left until AI is expected to start shrinking hiring of this major’s graduates. It doesn’t mean the major will disappear or that everyone will lose their job.

Electrical Engineering: how AI affects graduate hiring

New electrical engineers spend a lot of time on design work and drawing reviews that AI now handles, and the license protecting senior engineers only covers utility and public-infrastructure drawings, so it does little for a new graduate. What keeps hiring up instead is the current data-center and power-grid buildout, plus on-site work a screen can't do.

Why doesn't a license protect new electrical-engineering grads?

A professional engineering stamp is only legally required on utility and public-sector drawings, and a degree alone doesn't earn that license anyway, so it offers new graduates little shelter while AI absorbs the design and drawing-review work they'd normally start on. Power utilities are hiring anyway, driven by data-center and grid-expansion demand that has nothing to do with AI protecting the job.

How does utility work compare to electronics-design work here?

Power-generation and grid-engineering jobs, tied to that current buildout, are judged to hold up notably longer than general electrical-engineer or electronics-engineer roles, where AI-driven design tools apply more directly. Control and automation-engineer roles sit in between, since tuning a live industrial system still needs a person on-site.

What should an electrical-engineering student do to stand out?

Start the path toward a professional engineering license early if you're aiming at utility or public-infrastructure work, since that credential still carries real weight there. Get field experience with on-site commissioning or testing, not just circuit simulation in class, and consider coursework or a project tied to grid or data-center power systems, where hiring is currently strongest.
