Ethnic Studies: how AI affects graduate hiring

Ethnic studies majors most often go into nonprofit work, community organizing, teaching or social work. Two very different forces are squeezing the nonprofit path at once: office work like grant reports is now something software drafts well, while separate funding and policy cuts shrink budgets for reasons that have nothing to do with AI.

What nonprofit tasks does AI already handle well?

Writing grant proposals, drafting press releases and pulling together policy research for a nonprofit are all things a drafting tool now produces a workable version of quickly, exactly the entry-level office work a new graduate used to be hired to do. Community organizing itself, knocking on doors, running an event, building trust with people in a specific neighborhood, is a different, in-person skill that stays firmly human.

Are nonprofit hiring cuts actually caused by AI?

Not entirely: some states and cities have passed laws restricting diversity and equity programs, and many nonprofits have also lost grant funding, and both of those cuts jobs for reasons separate from any drafting tool. Anyone reading a shrinking job posting shouldn't assume AI alone explains it; sometimes the budget itself disappeared first.

How should someone in this major prepare for a durable career?

Building real, hands-on organizing experience, canvassing, running a campaign, working a coalition, is worth more than office and writing skills alone, since that in-person work is what stays hardest to automate. A social work license is a separate, protected direction worth researching directly, since it requires its own graduate program and state licensing exam rather than depending on a single employer's budget.
