Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies: how AI affects graduate hiring

Gender studies graduates most often move into fundraising, communications or direct service work at a nonprofit, and the fundraising side splits cleanly into two kinds of tasks that are treated very differently here. Writing the appeal letter is now something software drafts easily; keeping a major donor's trust over years of dinners and calls is not.

What part of a fundraising job is thinning out first?

An entry-level fundraiser used to spend a lot of time drafting appeal letters, grant proposals and campaign copy asking for donations, and a tool can already produce a workable version of that same letter or proposal from a short brief. What doesn't come from a template is a major donor relationship: knowing what a specific person cares about, checking in personally, and asking at the right moment, which stays a person's job.

Are these nonprofit cuts really about AI, or something else?

Some of the pressure on this field has nothing to do with AI at all: laws restricting diversity and equity programs in some states, and cuts to the grants many nonprofits rely on, are shrinking budgets and jobs on their own. Community organizing, working directly with the people a program serves, holds up longer than office and writing work regardless of which of these pressures is driving a given cut.

What should a gender studies major build toward, practically?

Direct experience with donor relationships, running an event, managing an actual gift officer's portfolio of donors, is worth more than writing samples alone, since that relationship work is what a hiring manager can't get from a drafting tool. It's also worth checking a target nonprofit's funding sources directly, since a program funded by a large grant that could disappear is a riskier bet than one with a broad base of individual donors.
