GIS, short for geographic information systems, is the software that turns location data into a map or a spatial analysis a planner or a business can act on. Making that map and writing the code behind the analysis are exactly the parts of the job a tool now does at a level that competes with an entry-level analyst.
What does an entry-level GIS analyst actually produce?
A typical task is taking a messy set of location data, cleaning it up, and writing the code that runs a spatial analysis, say, which neighborhoods flood most often, then turning that into a map and a short write-up for an urban planner or a business. A tool can already clean that same data and produce a workable map and analysis directly, which is why entry-level hiring for this kind of desk analyst work is shrinking first.
