International Relations: how AI affects graduate hiring
International relations graduates often start in overseas sales, nonprofit or legislative-aide jobs rather than diplomacy itself, since becoming a diplomat runs through its own separate, highly competitive federal process. The everyday writing those entry jobs are built on, sales correspondence, briefing memos on world events, is now something a tool drafts directly.
What does an entry-level international relations job actually involve day to day?
A new hire often spends time drafting price quotes and correspondence for an export deal, or writing a short briefing memo summarizing a foreign news event for someone more senior. A tool can already produce a workable version of that same quote, correspondence or briefing, so fewer entry hires are needed to produce the first draft, even though someone still has to sit across the table during an actual negotiation.
Why does the diplomat path look so different from the rest?
Becoming a diplomat requires passing a separate, highly competitive federal exam and selection process that has nothing to do with an international relations degree by itself, which is why that path is judged to hold up far longer than sales or legislative-aide work. Recent State Department staffing cuts were a policy decision, not something AI caused, and they're a different issue entirely from how routine drafting is changing.
