Linguistics: how AI affects graduate hiring

Linguistics is the study of how language actually works, and that expertise shows up two very different ways after graduation: labeling data that trains a language model, or teaching adult English learners. One of those jobs is being automated, and the other is where some linguists now go to work instead.

What kind of work used to fill entry-level linguistics jobs?

A lot of early-career linguists tagged and labeled examples of speech or text, called annotation work, so that a language model could learn from them, or taught adult English classes and ran conversation practice. Large language models now need far less of that manual tagging, and a program can already run a decent conversation-practice session on its own, so both of those entry paths are thinning out at the same time.

What protects English-learner teaching jobs at all?

A federal rule requires public schools to give students still learning English specific support, which keeps demand for that teaching role from disappearing outright. But that rule sets no fixed number of teachers a district must hire, so it slows the decline without stopping it. Speech-language work, treating an actual speech or language disorder, sits on firmer ground because it needs its own separate clinical license.

Where else can a linguistics background actually lead now?

Some linguists are moving toward building and evaluating language models themselves, work that specifically needs someone who understands grammar, meaning and how a language is structured, rather than away from the field entirely. Pairing linguistics coursework with some programming or data-analysis classes opens that door, while anyone drawn to teaching should look closely at the English-learner support requirement rather than assuming any teaching license alone guarantees a job.
