Counseling programs train students for the parts of mental health work insurance actually pays a licensed person to do, which matters more than what a chatbot can technically discuss. That licensing and billing structure is what props up hiring in a field with more people needing care than counselors to see them.
What counseling tasks is AI already taking over?
Writing up session notes after each appointment, scoring standardized assessments and handling brief, lower-stakes check-ins by text message are all things a tool now does at a usable level, freeing a counselor from a lot of the paperwork that used to eat into the day.
