Philosophy: how AI affects graduate hiring

Philosophy trains a very specific skill: taking an argument apart to see whether it actually holds up. That skill is what a junior policy or office job is largely about, and it's also exactly the skill left over once a drafting tool writes the first version of the memo instead of a new hire.

What kind of entry-level work is thinning out first?

New graduates in private-sector offices and policy shops used to spend their early months drafting memos, summarizing positions and structuring proposals from scratch. A tool can already produce a competent first draft of that same memo from source material, so hiring for that starting role is shrinking first. What a philosophy background adds on top, checking whether the draft's argument actually holds together and where its evidence is weak, is harder to automate than producing the draft itself.
