Photography work splits into two very different jobs: repeatable studio and product shoots, and one-of-a-kind moments like weddings and live events. AI editing and generation tools are already reshaping the first kind of work, while the second still depends on a photographer being physically present.

How is AI already changing photography work?

Retouching, culling through hundreds of shots, and even generating full product or lookbook images can now be done by AI tools, so agencies and studios need fewer assistants for that stage. Photographers who used to spend hours editing spend that time shooting instead, or shift toward directing what an AI tool produces rather than producing every frame by hand.

Do all photography-related jobs change at the same pace?

No. Editing-heavy work like video editing and photo-lab printing shifts earliest, because it happens entirely on a screen. Still photography and cinematography hold on longer, since someone has to physically be at the wedding, the film set, or the shoot. Camera work in particular lags behind editing work, because framing a live moment in person is harder to hand off than adjusting a file afterward.

What should a photography student build now?

Build a portfolio that spans both kinds of work: controlled product or studio shoots and live, unrepeatable events like weddings. Get comfortable directing AI editing and generation tools instead of avoiding them, since that is becoming part of the job.
