AI will first shrink the data analysis and simulation roles that bachelor's graduates have used as a side door into industry. But hands-on fab troubleshooting and equipment recovery, plus hardware demand from CHIPS Act fab expansion, national labs, and defense, prop up entry-level hiring.

Major lifespan is the time left until AI is expected to start shrinking hiring of this major’s graduates. It doesn’t mean the major will disappear or that everyone will lose their job.

Physics: how AI affects graduate hiring

Physics programs teach building and troubleshooting an experimental setup, running simulations, and defending a result against every alternative explanation. AI already runs and interprets much of that simulation work, so a new graduate's time shifts toward the equipment itself: setting it up, diagnosing why it stopped, and getting it running again.

Which physics-adjacent jobs does AI reach first?

Data analysis and simulation work, a common side door bachelor's graduates use to enter the workforce, is where AI moves fastest, since a computer can already run and interpret much of that analysis on its own. Physically troubleshooting equipment on a chip-fabrication floor and demand for hardware from new fab construction funded by a federal law called the CHIPS Act, along with national labs and defense work, are propping up entry-level hiring for now. YOU'RE NEXT expects broader pressure to build starting around 2032.

How do research, chip-industry, and teaching paths compare for physics grads?

Physicists doing research and data scientists doing similar analysis work are judged to feel pressure earliest, at close to the same pace. Semiconductor process and equipment engineers, whose work means keeping chip-fabrication tools running, are expected to work alongside AI diagnostic tools rather than lose ground to them, since a person still has to physically fix the machine. Secondary school physics teachers are expected to see a similar shift toward working with AI lesson tools.

What should physics students do to keep their options open?

Get hands-on time building, wiring, and troubleshooting real experimental equipment, not only running simulations on a laptop, since that physical diagnostic skill is exactly what is holding up hiring in chip manufacturing and national labs. Learn to direct AI simulation and analysis tools rather than only running code by hand, and look at internships tied to fab construction or defense hardware work, where demand is currently strongest.
