A legislative aide's first job has long been answering constituent mail, drafting bill summaries and writing press releases for a member of Congress, and legislatures have already approved AI tools that do exactly that. Because congressional staff jobs offer no job security to begin with, that combination is squeezing junior hiring fast.
What is a legislative aide's job actually made of, day to day?
A new aide spends much of the day drafting replies to constituent letters and calls, writing short memos summarizing what a bill would actually do, and putting together press releases for the member of Congress they work for. Legislative offices have already approved AI tools that draft that same correspondence, memo and release, and because these staff jobs are at-will, meaning either side can end the job without cause, there's little standing in the way of cutting a junior position once the tool covers the writing.
Why does lobbying hold up longer than a legislative-aide job?
Lobbying runs on a personal relationship with specific lawmakers built over time, meetings, favors remembered, trust earned, which a drafting tool has no way to replicate, so hiring there is judged to shrink well after junior legislative staff jobs. Public administration and law school are narrowing on their own separate timelines, driven more by government hiring and licensing than by anything happening inside a legislative office specifically.
How should a political science major respond to this?
An internship on Capitol Hill or in a state legislature still teaches how these offices actually run, but it's worth treating the writing tasks as something to learn to review and improve rather than the whole job, since the drafting itself is what's already automated. Building direct relationships with people in this world, the actual currency of lobbying, is a sturdier long-term bet than memo-writing skill alone, and anyone eyeing law school or a public-sector exam should start that separate process early.
