AI will take over the control code, PLC programming, and firmware that new hires handle first, but robot installation, on-site tuning, and sensor debugging still need people. The AI robotics boom and the spread of manufacturing and logistics automation are growing demand.

Major lifespan is the time left until AI is expected to start shrinking hiring of this major’s graduates. It doesn’t mean the major will disappear or that everyone will lose their job.

Robotics & Mechatronics Engineering: how AI affects graduate hiring

New robotics engineers spend time writing control code and PLC programs, work AI takes over first, but installing a robot on a factory floor, tuning it on-site, and debugging a misbehaving sensor still need someone present. Growing interest in AI-driven robots and automation across manufacturing and logistics adds jobs on top of that.

Which robotics-engineering tasks does AI reach first?

Writing control code, programming a programmable logic controller, and drafting firmware are the deskbound tasks AI now takes over first. Installing a robot on an actual production line, tuning its motion once it's running, and figuring out why a sensor is misreading the world stay hands-on tasks that keep a person on-site.

Why does this major look stronger than a typical engineering degree right now?

The current boom in AI-driven robotics and the spread of automation into manufacturing and logistics warehouses is currently adding jobs faster than AI is removing the coding work behind them, similar to how strong AI demand is currently propping up the AI major itself. Embedded and firmware-developer roles feel more of the coding-side pressure sooner than robotics roles built around physical installation.

What should a robotics-engineering student practice now?

Get real time installing and tuning a robot arm or automated system in a lab or on a co-op, not just writing control code on a laptop, since that on-site debugging skill is what current demand rewards most. Learn to work alongside an AI coding assistant for the programming side, so your time goes to the physical integration work that's harder to automate.
