What still needs a person's hand?
Cutting a clean, straight line by hand where a wall meets the ceiling or trim, and properly preparing a rough or damaged surface before the first coat of paint, require judgment and precision that spraying equipment doesn't have. Painting a building's exterior from a suspended platform in real wind and weather also still needs a person managing the equipment and adjusting to conditions.
If you're working in or entering painting, what should you build?
Precision hand skills, cutting clean lines, surface prep, detail work, are what stay valuable as spraying equipment takes over large flat areas, so it's worth deliberately building that reputation rather than relying only on general painting speed. Getting comfortable operating and setting up spray equipment yourself is also useful, since being the person who runs the machine is more secure than competing against it.
