What has AI already taken over here?
Automated process control and AI vision systems already catch most panel defects and suggest recipe adjustments faster than an engineer scanning under a lamp — that software runs today in modern fabs. What it can't yet do is walk the floor with the team during an actual yield crisis and figure out, on the spot, which step in a long process chain just went wrong.

Spotting a defect under a lamp and tuning a recipe are routine enough for software now, but working through an unexplained yield crisis with the rest of the fab team — testing theories against a live production line — still needs people who know the process inside out. No license or staffing rule protects this job; it shrinks only as fast as the wider industry itself is shrinking.
How should someone prepare for a career like this?
A background in electrical engineering, materials science or semiconductor processing is the common entry point, often starting as a general process engineer in a fab before focusing on displays. Since routine inspection is what automation absorbs first, the skill worth building is breadth — comfort diagnosing problems across several process steps, not just one — because that versatility is what keeps an engineer useful as the industry itself contracts.
