Corporate research software can now draft a literature review, run a simulation, and even sketch a first experiment plan — work that used to be how a junior engineer learned the ropes. What still needs someone at a bench is building a prototype and finding out, by breaking it, what the model missed.
Which R&D tasks has AI already picked up?
Literature reviews, simulations, draft reports and even patent paperwork are jobs a research team can now hand to AI tools, along with a first pass at an experiment plan. Because that's exactly the work junior engineers used to be given to learn on, the earliest cuts land there rather than among senior staff, and only later spread wider as the practice becomes routine across a whole research division.
What keeps a person at the lab bench?
A model can propose an experiment, but someone still has to build the actual prototype, break it on purpose to find its limits, and carry a result from a bench test into a real production line — a handoff that depends on relationships with people on the factory floor. Convincing management to keep funding a line of research with no guaranteed payoff is also still a human argument.
How should an early-career R&D engineer respond?
Since AI now covers the literature and simulation work junior engineers used to cut their teeth on, ask for real bench time instead — building, testing and breaking prototypes yourself rather than only running someone else's model. Following a project all the way through its handoff to a production line teaches judgment about manufacturing limits that a report alone never will.
