AI impact · ReplacementTax Preparer: what AI changes and what stays
Once a return is simple, software already finishes it alone. What's left for a preparer is the messy case: an audit letter that scares someone, a small business with several income streams, a divorce or inheritance that changes everything about a filing.
What kind of return does software already finish alone?
A simple, standard return with one job and no unusual income is already something free filing tools and paid software finish end to end, with a person barely involved. That has already pulled most of the routine, seasonal filing work away from a storefront desk handling it by hand.
Why is there almost nothing stopping someone from doing this job?
Getting the ID number the tax agency requires to file for others takes no exam at all, and only a handful of states register preparers in any way; almost everywhere else, anyone can hang a sign and start. Nothing structurally protects this work, so the only real gate is a client's trust.
How should someone stand out in this field now?
Since the basic filing is already software's job and the barrier to entering the field is close to nothing, the practical move is specializing in exactly what software can't handle alone: a scared client responding to an audit letter, a small business with messy books, or an unusual life event. That's where a person is still worth paying for.
