until AI starts shrinking hiring of this major’s graduates
Sep 24, 2028 · 728 days left
AI already handles modeling, data cleanup, report drafts and SQL analysis, so entry-level analyst and data analyst hiring shrinks first. Most of these jobs are at-will, private-sector roles in finance and business, with little to slow cuts in new hiring.
Major lifespan is the time left until AI is expected to start shrinking hiring of this major’s graduates. It doesn’t mean the major will disappear or that everyone will lose their job.

Economics: how AI affects graduate hiring
Every common destination for an economics degree, research analyst, data analyst, plain economist, runs through the same small set of tasks: building a spreadsheet model, cleaning a dataset, writing a query, drafting the memo that explains it all. A tool now does each of those at a workable level.
What did a junior analyst actually spend most of the day doing?
Building and updating a financial or economic model in a spreadsheet, cleaning up a messy dataset before it could be analyzed, writing the queries needed to pull the right numbers, and drafting a short memo explaining the results to someone more senior filled most of an entry-level day. A tool can already do a workable version of all four of those steps, which is why hiring for this starting role is shrinking across finance, research and data work at roughly the same time.
Why doesn't any part of this field offer more protection?
Nearly every common landing spot for this degree is a private-sector, at-will job in finance or business, meaning no license, no required staffing level and no long licensing exam stands between a firm and cutting a junior role. That's different from many other majors, where at least one common exit, teaching or a licensed profession, holds up longer; here, all four common paths shrink on a similar timeline.
What should an economics major do since the usual paths offer no cushion?
Since building a basic model or pulling data no longer sets anyone apart, it's worth aiming at the judgment-heavy side of the job instead, explaining a messy or ambiguous result to a skeptical audience, or specializing in the kind of technical, quantitative work that goes into building the analytical tools themselves rather than just using them. Direct client or relationship-based work, such as advising a specific account, is also harder for a tool to fully take over than pure analysis.
